The UFAWU-Unifor has written the Minister urging her to open the Fraser River sockeye fishery this week to allow BC fish harvesters to begin harvesting when the Summer run is available in Johnstone Straits. Waiting until the ultra-conservative DFO Regional heads to make up their minds, will leave Canadian fishermen, once again, on shore watching the fish go by while Americans are fishing.
UFAWU-Unifor wrote to DFO on August 2nd urging management to use the actual facts of the Skeena harvests and run size. There are no scientific or biological reasons to close the fishery before the IFMP closure date of August 10th. The Skeena fishery restraints in the IFMP were a result of pre-season Consultations and further reductions due to non-biological reasons should not be implemented.
