UFAWU-Unifor Remembers Nick Carr

UFAWU-Unifor was saddened by the recent news of Nick Carr's passing.

Nick was born in Croatia before moving to Canada at a young age and later becoming a fisherman.

During his career, Nick accomplished many things, including becoming President of Local 1 of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union.

While president, Nick worked relentlessly for the betterment of the working class in the fishing industry and beyond.

Local 1 held a prominent place in the affairs of the UFAWU and under his long and effective presidency, the local's policies were politically influential in the whole fleet.

Nick became one of the longest-standing members of the Union — a feat that exemplifies Nick's dedication to both workers' rights and the fishing industry.

Nick also spent decades in leadership positions on fishermen’s negotiating committees, successfully negotiating contracts for 55 years between 1945 and 2000. Because of this dedication, fishermen on the BC coast flourished due to the great salmon and herring prices bargained on their behalf.

These are just some of the accomplishments that Nick made during his long and impressive career.

Nick will be remembered fondly for his dedication, his tenacity, and all of his excellent and impactful work with the Union.

He will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
