Today, Sunday, Aug 21, 2022, commercial fish harvesters will hold rallies in Steveston B.C. and Campbell River B.C. in support of fishing fleets having a fishery on Fraser Sockeye runs.
The Steveston B.C. rally will be held at the dock near Pajo’s Fish & Chips at Steveston Wharf (12351 Third Ave, Richmond, BC V7E 2Z1) at 1:00 PM.
The Campbell River rally will start at the Campbell River Labour Hall (830 14 Ave, Campbell River, BC V9W 4H4) at 2:00 PM.
We encourage local media to attend these rallies.
These rallies will be a convenient opportunity for members of the media to speak directly with real Canadian commercial fish harvesters about the issues they currently face.
Background Information:
On August 18, Canadian commercial fishers learned they would bear the brunt of conservation as Canada rejected Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) recommendations and the U.S. accepted them.
Despite PSC recommendations that would support a fishery, the Fraser River Panel announced that “All Canadian Panel Area waters remain closed to commercial salmon fishing,” citing a precautionary approach. The United States has accepted the PSC run size recommendations, meaning that Canadian harvesters are idle while Americans fish.
